The Pioneers had a breakout success on Friday against their friendly rivals, the Saginaw Rough Riders, in the annual Battle for the Wagon Wheel. Offensively, the boys in blue were a well-oiled machine. Kicker Ben Perez was 8/8 PAT's and kicked the longest field goal of his career a 42 yarder that put the score 10-0 for Boswell in the first quarter. This trend of success continued over the second, and by the time the buzzer sounded for halftime, the Pioneers were up in a comfortable lead of 31-7 thanks to touchdown passes from Dju Dju Lords to Chance Lassiter and Michael Brown. Chance and JAce Richardson combined for a over 150 yards on the ground and five touchdowns, three for the former and two for the latter.
Defensively, Boswell formed a tight bulwark that was nearly impenetrable. They forced many punts and punched through their opponent's offensive line routinely. Edgar Trevino got the Pioneer's first turnover of the season when he picked off a fourth down pass deep in blue territory, and Lamar Isidore snatched a second Saginaw deep ball in the second quarter. Byt the end of the night, the boys in blue amassed a grand total of 59 points, stealing the game and reclaiming the coveted Wagon Wheel for the next calendar year.
The Pioneers are back in action on their home turf Friday, September 4th, to take on Paschal, looking for a repeat of last week's numbers.
