Looking to keep the Saddle, and secure second place; the Boswell Pioneers battled sister school Chisholm Trail on Thursday, Nov. 3.
The Pioneer defense started the momentum, stopping Chisholm Trail from scoring on a long drive and the offense got right to work.
Sawyer Farr found Gage Ellis for 13-yards on the third play from scrimmage, and a few plays later connected with Kairel Robertson for 29-yards, that set up a touchdown run from Farr for the 7-0 lead.
The score remained the same for the rest of the quarter and into the second quarter, as both defenses were aggressive, and made key stops.
The Pioneers broke through midway through the second quarter; Carter found an opening and ripped off a 70-yard gain, setting up his second touchdown of the evening, and a 14-0 lead. Boswell put together another scoring drive just before the half; Farr hit Aaron Diego for 28-yards, and Carter had his third TD of the evening, as Boswell led 21-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Pioneers scored on their opening possession putting together a long drive, that included a 35-yard strike from Farr to Ellis that set up a short TD run by Robertson, and a 28-0 lead.
Turnovers hurt Boswell in the second half and prevented them from adding to their lead. Chisholm Trail got a pair of touchdowns in the second half, but the Pioneer defense was flying around all evening long and preserved the 28-14 win for Boswell.
"Defensively, we knew we had to stop their running game and {Israel} Kaloso," Head Coach John "Ab" Abendschan said. "He's a powerful runner, and their line is really tough. I thought our kids played well, Ezra {Carter} ran the ball really well, Gage {Ellis} had a big night, the offensive line played great. We just need to keep the focus, and keep it going."
Carter had 175 yards rushing and two TDs. All the Pioneer touchdowns were through the ground with Farr and Robertson rushing in for scores. The defense held a great Ranger rushing attack to 132 yards with Henry Marvie leading the stoppage. Jack Fuller had 13 tackles, Alex Rosales added nine, Matthew Beck had eight and Jaden Saysanam threw down six tackles.
The Pioneers finished the regular season 8-2, and now for the second consecutive year, their focus turns to the state playoffs.
"This is a special group of kids who have battled some adversity, and have overcome it." Coach Ab said. "That's a mark of a great team. Now with the playoffs, we have to re-write our goals and figure out what we want to do, and that's to win it all. To be able to do that, we have to fix the little things, be better at it, and continue moving forward."
Boswell will host the first round of the playoffs, welcoming Byron Nelson to Pioneer Stadium on Friday, Nov. 11.
"We have a home playoff game, and that's all you can ask for," he said. "That's a gigantic reward for our kids, and the effort they've put in. The fact that they've created that, is a huge accomplishment, and I'm so proud of them."
Kick-off from Pioneer Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.
