On a very frigid evening in front of a TV audience, the Boswell Pioneers welcomed Byron Nelson to Pioneer Stadium for a Bi-District showdown on Friday, Nov. 11.
The Pioneers moved the ball efficiently on their first drive, including fooling Byron Nelson with an Aaron Diego fake punt to pick up the first down. The drive stalled in the Byron Nelson end of the field, and Byron Nelson put together a scoring drive on their first series to take the 7-0 lead. Boswell came right back on their second series.
On a fourth down and one, Ezra Carter burst through the line and raced 52-yards down to the Byron Nelson two-yard line. On the next play, he followed his offensive line and scored from 2-yards away to tie the game at 7-7.
It was a defensive battle for the remainder of the quarter, as neither team was able to find the endzone. Boswell put together a drive that stretched into the second quarter, fueled by a 20-yard strike from Sawyer Farr to Carter, and a 12-yard completion from Farr to Diego to set up a first and goal. The Pioneer drive was stopped on downs at the Byron Nelson 2.
Byron Nelson put together two scoring drives in the quarter, but Boswell answered right back following a stadium outage. Farr pump faked, and found Diego for the toe-tap touchdown in the corner of the endzone to pull Boswell with 20-14 at the half.
The Pioneers battled in the second half, but couldn't find the endzone as Byron Nelson pulled away for the 54-14 win.
"We got beat by a really good team," Head Coach John "Ab" Abendschan said. "I told the kids there's going to be times in life that you're going to give it your all and come up short. These kids gave it their all, did everything we asked of them, and I'm proud to be their coach. They're an amazing group,"
Offensively, Carter "again put the team on his back, and played like the warrior he is" rushing for 122-yards and the touchdown. Diego "played one of his best games" had the fake punt, and scored the other Pioneer touchdown; and was one of the top receivers on the evening. Defensively, Alex Rosales led with 13 tackles, Eddie DeLeon had eight, Matthew Becker had seven, and Jackson Robertson had four, while "many more played with great effort and toughness."
For Boswell, they finished the season 8-3 in their third season in 6A; making the playoffs two out of three seasons (2020 they finished fifth) and were the District runner-ups, winning three out of their final four regular season games.
"This is such a unique group," he said. "I cannot express how thankful I am to work with coaches who give their heart and soul to these kids. It was a tall task going into 6A and one thing I know for sure since coming here in 2002, the Boswell Pioneers are always going to fight."
The Pioneers will graduate a plethora of seniors but return a bunch from this year and Coach Ab said there are some good student-athletes coming up. He was very appreciative of his seniors for their leadership, character, work ethic, and the legacy they left behind.
"This group has set the mark," he said. "We believe in the system. We'll take this film, learn from it, and be better because of it. The 2023 season starts Monday."

Congratulations on a great season Pioneers!
