A four touchdown performance from Sawyer Farr and two rushing scores from Ezra Carter helped the Boswell Pioneers defeat Haltom 49-23 on Thursday, Sept. 8.
The win moved the Pioneers to 3-0 for the first time since 2017.
The Pioneer defense forced a three and out on the first drive, and the offense went to work. Farr connected with Ellis on a 31-yard pass to set up the Pioneers inside Haltom territory. Two plays later, Ellis scored the first of his three receiving touchdowns from 34-yards out to put Boswell up 7-0 early. The Pioneers scored on their first two possessions; Ellis scored from 52-yards on the very next possession, putting a spin move on the defender and racing to the endzone.
The defense was stout the entire first half, led by Jack Fuller and Isaiah Murphy. The offense scored on all but one possession in the first half; Kairel Robertson had a six-yard run to set up a touchdown from Carter, and he scored again just before the half to put Boswell up 28-3 at the half.
A couple of turnovers in the second half, led to two touchdowns by Haltom to cut the lead to 28-17, but the offense overcame the turnovers and the defense remained stingy. Farr found Ellis for their third score of the night and connected with Aaron Diego in the fourth quarter for a 42-17 lead. Colin Dixon added a rushing score late to cap the victory.
"It's exciting, and this is such a fun group," Head Coach John Abendschan said on being 3-0. "We battled some adversity this week, and in this game. Haltom caught fire, and came back. But, our kids overcame that adversity. Our non-district record doesn't matter. Our season starts Friday. We have to be ready."
Farr finished with 281-yards rushing through the air, Carter had 168-yards rushing on the ground, and Ellis led the receivers with 145-yards. Defensively, Fuller finished with seven tackles, Murphy had six tackles and three pass breakups. Eric Trejo made all seven extra points on special teams.
Next up, is the District 3-6A opener against Trinity this week.
"Trinity is a great team, and they're well coached," Coach Ab said. "We're playing for the playoffs starting this week. It's playoff money, and every district win is money in the bank, and you have to cash that check to get into the playoffs. Trinity is a big match-up, and we're excited."
Friday is also First Responder Night, with pre-game festivities planned before the game to recognize our First Responders. Kick-off from Pioneer Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
