A four touchdown (three rushing and one passing) performance from Sawyer Farr, and standout performances defensively helped the Boswell Pioneers open District 3-6A with a 45-26 victory over the Trinity Trojans on Friday, Sept. 16. The victory also marked the fourth straight game that the Pioneers scored at least 40 points and their first 4-0 start since 2017.
Before the game, EMS, police, fire, and towing from Eagle Mountain - Saginaw, Fort Worth, and Saginaw were honored and helped welcome the Pioneers to the field, while a Fort Worth P.D. Helicopter flew overhead during the National Anthem to the roar and cheers of the crowd.
On the field, the Pioneers gave the home crowd plenty to roar about.
Trinity scored on their first possession, but the Pioneer offense calmly drove down the field for a nine play drive, capped off by a strike from Farr to Ty Dauer to tie the game at seven.
Trinity scored on their next possession and missed the extra point, but once again the Pioneers answered; Ezra Carter had two carries for 28-yards on the drive, Aaron Diego hauled in a 28-yard reception, and Farr finished off the drive with a 28-yard run for the score as Boswell led 14-13, and remained in the lead for the remainder of the half.
On a 3rd down play on Trinity's next possession; Jaedon Langley and Jackson Robertson burst through the line for the sack, forced the fumble; and Langley scooped it up and scored to push the lead to 21-13. Trinity scored towards the end of the half to pull within 21-20; but Boswell answered right back highlighted by a 23-yard pass from Farr to Gage Ellis who nearly scored, but was ruled out at the 1-yard line. The Pioneers kicked the field goal, and led 24-20 at the half.
In the second half, Trinity scored on their opening possession and missed the extra point to lead 26-24, but once again the Pioneers answered behind the running ability of Farr. He scored from 44-yards out to give the Pioneers the lead for good. The Pioneer defense took over in the second half: getting a huge stop on a fourth down try, forcing a three and out; leading to Farr's third rushing score of the evening and an interception from Nick Hawthorne setting up a touchdown run from Carter to seal the game.
"These kids have done everything we've asked of them, and I am truly blessed to be their head coach," Head Coach John "Ab" Abendschan said. "When Trinity took the lead in the third quarter, our kids said that they wanted this game. As a coach, I couldn't be more proud to hear them say that. I'd love to take credit, but it's these kids' leadership and initiative that helped get it done."
Coach Ab also gave kudos to Offensive Coordinator Wes Weaver, and Defensive Coordinator Todd Davis for their game plans this week along with the rest of the coaching staff in preparing the Pioneer student-athletes.
Statistically, Farr led the way with 216 total yards (124 passing and 92 rushing) and Carter added 181-yards rushing with a touchdown on the ground.
"I'm going to have to talk to Sawyer about his baseball commitment to Texas A&M," Coach Ab said with a laugh. "After his performance, he's going to have people wanting him to play football. He's a special baseball player and a heck of a quarterback. Ezra was tough, and had another great game running the ball, and our offensive line continues to get better. Credit to Coach {Casey} Staples and Coach {Jimmy} Meeks for the job they've done with the offensive line."
Defensively, Jack Fuller had 16 tackles, Hawthorne had the interception, and Jackson Robertson also played a great game. As a whole, Boswell limited Trinity to just six points in the second half and bottled up the Trojan run game.
"Trinity is powerful, athletic, and well coached," Coach Ab said. "We had to adjust to their speed, and we did a poor job of containment in the first half; and Coach {Todd} Davis is a guru. He made some changes at the half, and our kids did a really good job in the second half limiting a good offense."
While they got the win, Coach Ab said they didn't hand out the District Championship; saying they had six more games to play, beginning this week on homecoming against Paschal. Kick-off from Pioneer Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
