A stingy Pioneer defense that forced three turnovers and five touchdowns from quarterback Tye Renfro sent the Pioneers to the bye week on a winning note after a 44-7 victory over Paschal on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Trinity in a game that Head Coach Wes Weaver said got away from them, the Pioneers were eager to put that game behind them. From the game’s opening kickoff, the Pioneers did just that.
On the opening possession of the game, Boswell played their game and moved the ball down the field. Renfro used his feet to extend several plays; including converting a third down from their own 29, and stood tall in the pocket, firing a pass to a wide-open Ty Dauer for a big gain. Five plays later, Colin Dixon punched his ticket to the end zone for the early lead.
“As well as we have done the last few games, this was the first game where we went down and scored on our first drive,” Coach Weaver said. “It was nice to see us go down and put points on the board.”
The defense was relentless all evening long, not allowing Paschal to gain much yardage and allowing the Pioneer offense to operate in favorable field position.
After the initial defensive stop, Boswell kept their foot on the gas; getting touchdowns on five of their six possessions of the first half.
On their next offensive possession, Renfro started with a 21-yard pass to Kairel Robertson, and four plays later connected with a wide-open Tres Eldridge for a 45-yard touchdown. Two drives later, Renfro had his third touchdown of the half; a 60-yard catch and run to Dauer.
Late in the first half after Paschal shanked a punt; Robertson was the recipient of a Renfro touchdown pass. Boswell was given a bonus possession, after Jeremiah Pierre intercepted a pass. The Pioneers took advantage; Renfro escaped pressure and found Dauer for his second receiving touchdown of the evening, sending Boswell to the locker room ahead 34-0.
In the second half, Paschal did get on the board in the third quarter, but Boswell answered right back with a rushing touchdown from Renfro, and Jack Garcia kicked a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
“Our kids had a great week of practice,” Coach Weaver said. “They wanted to put the Trinity game behind them, and they did that. The kids played really good.”
Renfro finished his evening with 364 total yards (283 passing and 81 rushing), Dixon added 78-yards rushing on the ground, while Dauer was the leading receiver with 123-yards.
“Tye {Renfro} is getting better each week, and he is getting more and more comfortable playing quarterback and taking on a leadership role,” he said. “After playing defense the last few years, he’s done a great job establishing himself and that’s great for us.”
Defensively, led by Justin McIntosh, Jaedon Langley, Deecon Stewart and Donta Reese; they held Paschal to under 150 total yards.
With the mid-point of the season upon us, and while they’ll keep pushing forward, they’ll get proper rest, and do some community service with the second half of the season still looming.
The Pioneers finish out the season with four of the last five games at Pioneer Stadium. First up, is a big game against Top 10 in 6A North Crowley.
“They’ll be a big, tough, physical and athletic team,” he said about North Crowley.
Kick-off on Oct. 6 is set for 7:30 p.m. from Pioneer Stadium. That game will be first responders night on the field before the game.
